2011 Sonic Air Raid Results

Pulaski Academy may start asking Harding Academy to move their home games to First Security Stadium in Searcy.  The Bruins have gone 28-0 at the Sonic Air Raid since the tournament expanded to 16 teams in 2006 and began using the stadium to play their games.  They did not attend in 2006 or 2008, but they won the tournament in 2007, 2009, 2010, and now, 2011.  The Bruins defeated Lake Hamilton in the first round of the double elimination tournament, Searcy in the second round, then Greenbrier in the winners' bracket finals.  Lake Hamilton would battle back and play in its 6th straight game (1:30, 2:15, 3:00, 3:45, 4:30, and 5:15)  to get another shot at PA.  That proved to be too much to overcome as the Bruins defeated the Wolves, 30-21 for the championship.

In the consolation bracket, Harding Academy would breeze through the winners' bracket after finishing pool play with a disappointing 0-3 record.  They defeated Watson Chapel, Wynne, and Bald Knob before waiting for the losers' bracket winner, Shiloh Christian.  Shiloh defeated Harding to force the if necessary game.  Harding would recover, however, and defeated Shiloh, 26-18, to win the consolation championship.

In our opinion, there were few surprises coming out of this year's tournament.  We were pleased to see three teams getting involved in 7 on 7 that normally don't.  We are quite sure this was the first big tournament that Catholic, Corning, and Wynne have ever attended.  Catholic has played in 7 on 7 leagues for several years, so there wasn't much of an adjustment period for them as they played pretty well.  Both Corning and Wynne performed about as expected considering.  They will both me much better in this event next year.

One other note about the tournament is the absence of five teams (Conway, Bryant, Lakeside, DeWitt, and Heber Springs) that had planned this for their summer schedule.  One of the Arkansas Activities Association rules about these tournaments is that you cannot compete in them unless your school is out for the summer.  With days missed this year due to snow and floods, not only did some teams have to miss this tournament, but West Memphis had to cancel their annual tournament that was scheduled for this same day.
