Southwest Elite Day 1 Results

The Southwest Elite pool play is complete and the results are below.  They can also be found here. The only two undefeated teams are Fayetteville and Derby (KS).  And just how do other Arkansas teams stack up to these regional and national powerhouses?  Seven of the 11 Arkansas schools entered are seeded in the top 15 of the 32 teams.  Har-Ber is 6-1 from what may have been the toughest pool, but more impressive is 3A Charleston is also 6-1.

Four Tournaments on Tap this Weekend

James King Memorial 7-on-7 Tournament

Malvern hosted an 8-team 7-on-7 tournament on Wednesday.  Rain shortened the event and Catholic was declared the winner as the only undefeated team.  Other teams included Arkadelphia, Glen Rose, Hot Springs, Malvern, Poyen, Sheridan, and Sylvan Hills.

Southwest Elite 7-on-7 Showcase

The state's largest 7-on-7 tournament begins on Friday with 32 teams from 10 different states.  The Southwest Elite 7-on-7 Showcase starts at 9 am with teams from Alabama, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas as well as 11 teams from Arkansas.  A schedule for the event can be found here.  The teams will play 7 pool play games on Friday with a double-elimination tournament to begin on Saturday.

This event has quickly grown from 12 teams in 2009 to its current 32 team format.  Arkansas teams have won 3 out of the 4 years.  Each of the defending champions will be in the field:

2009 Shiloh Christian (Springdale, AR)
2010 Olive Branch (MS)
2011 Bentonville (AR)
2012 Fayetteville (AR)

We generally make pool predictions in these tournaments, but with our unfamiliarity with these out-of-state teams, we would be doing so out of ignorance.  There are several quality teams with a chance to win the tournament and expect some Arkansas teams to be included in that group.

Fountain Lake wins 18th Annual Tournament

For the second time in three years, Fountain Lake keeps the championship trophy in their field house as they defeated Dierks, 29-23, in the finals.  Dierks and Fountain Lake both pulled off upsets in the semifinals as Dierks beat Charleston, 35-28, and Fountain Lake defeated Mayflower in overtime, 30-28.

Fountain Lake Head Coach Tommy Gilleran had to do some shuffling around after two teams, Mena and Carlisle, dropped out earlier in the week.  With 10 teams split into two equal pools, each team had four pool play games with everyone qualifying for the tournament seeded by those results.  Mayflower dominated pool A with two 16-point games being their closest contests.  Fountain Lake and Clinton both had a 3-1 record in pool B to take the top two spots, but neither had been as dominant as Mayflower.

The Fountain Lake Tournament is the longest running 7-on-7 tournament in Arkansas as this weekend marked the 18th year of the event.

2013 Fountain Lake 7-on-7 Preview

The 2013 Fountain Lake 7-on-7 Tournament features 12 schools from the lower classifications.  Pool A looks to be very competitive where we think 3 teams have a chance to win the pool.  Mena had a very good showing at the Summer Showdown, defending champion Charleston won their inaugural tournament on June 15, and Mayflower went toe-to-toe with some big dogs at the Shootout of the South.  Pool B should be Fountain Lake's to lose, but should see good competition from most of the other teams.  The top two teams in each pool will play against each other in a 4-team single-elimination tournament to determine the champion.

Pool A Predictions
Hard to go against the best quarterback in the state and future Razorback in Charleston's Ty Storey, but Mayflower has a really good one in their own right to go along with two very impressive receivers.
1. Mayflower
2. Charleston
3. Mena
4. Hoxie
5. Dierks
6. Fountain Lake JV

Pool A Schedule - First game begins at 9:00. Games are 20 minutes long, games will begin as soon as possible when the previous games are over.

Pool B Predictions
Fountain Lake should win this pool, but with 20 minute games, look for Carlisle to win some low possession games and for Smackover to make some noise with their athletes.  Lake Hamilton's JV will also be a contender.
1. Fountain Lake

20 Teams Ready for 7-on-7 Shootout

(LITTLE ROCK, AR) –Twenty high school football teams invade the Mighty Bluebird Complex on Friday for the 9th Annual Shootout of the South 7-on-7 Tournament presented by Baptist Health Orthopedic Center.

Highlighting this year’s field are three-time defending champion, Pulaski Academy, along with former champions Allen, Texas (2006), Heritage Hall (2007), Lake Hamilton (2008), and Fayetteville (2009).

Newcomers to this year’s tournament are Cashion (OK), Clarendon, Clinton, Jacksonville, Little Rock Christian, and Malvern.

Other teams include Afton (OK), Greenbrier, Mayflower, Stigler (OK), Watson Chapel (Pine Bluff), Central (Little Rock), Harrison, Lakeside (Hot Springs), and Russellville.

Pulaski Academy, Fayetteville, and Russellville have attended the tournament every year since it began in 2005 as the Bruin 7-on-7 Tournament.

The marquee quarterbacks going into the weekend will be Lakeside’s Garrett Carson and Allen’s Kyler Murray, who has six BCS offers that include Arkansas, Ohio State, and Texas A&M.

Players to keep an eye on at receiver are Jalen Curtis of Russellville, Jordan Dennis and Blake Power of Fayetteville, Jacksonville duo Robert Harris and Kajon Daniels, and Clarendon’s Richard Knox.  Fayetteville’s C.J. O’Grady will work at tight end.

Catching the ball out of the backfield will be highlighted by running backs Logan Moragne and Deandre Brown of Little Rock Central, Lamont Gause of Jacksonville, and Terrell Tyson of Fayetteville.

Defensively, Pulaski Academy’s Tyler Colquitt and Allen’s Christian Sam, who has 16 BCS level offers, will be anchors at linebacker.  Central’s Hayden Mills, Baylor commit Chad Adams and Mayomi Olootu of Allen, and Fayetteville’s Dre Greenlaw alongside two-way players Dennis and Tyson will be the best bets to shut down the offenses from their secondary spots.

The top four teams will qualify for the 7on7U National Championship (www.7on7.com) being held July 19-21 in Washington, D.C.  Pulaski Academy, won the inaugural event in 2011.

Mighty Bluebird Complex is off Highway 10 West on Pinnacle Valley Road.  Admission to the tournament is $3 per person each day.  Age 5 and under is free.  Concessions will be available.

Twitter (@Shootout7on7) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/ShootoutOfTheSouth) will be updated throughout the tournament.

The tournament is sponsored by Baptist Health Orthopedic Center, Landers Chevrolet, Virtual Piggy, Adidas, The Hatcher Agency, Landers Toyota, and Midwest Sports.
