Arkansas 7-on-7 Football's 2011 Mid-Season Top 10

ArkansasVarsity has produced their mid-season Top 20. We decided to give you our Top 10 along with our rational for placing the teams where we did. You can visit Luke over at ArkansasVarsity.com to compare.

1. Pulaski Academy
  • PA finished 10-0 at the Shootout of the South, disposing of Allen, TX and Belton, TX (twice) as well as top Arkansas teams Fayetteville, Rogers Heritage, El Dorado and Nashville. They also defeated Greenbrier and Lake Hamilton (twice) at the Sonic Air Raid and defeated Bryant at the ASPC Summer Showdown. Bryant is their lone loss from pool play at the Summer Showdown.

2. Fayetteville
  • Austin Allen showed why there is hype around his big right arm at the Shootout of the South. He led the Bulldogs to victories over top teams Greenbrier, El Dorado, CAC, and Rogers Heritage.

3. Lake Hamilton
  • Lake Hamilton's defeats this year have come to Greenbrier in their first game at the Air Raid, who they would later beat in the tournament, Pulaski Academy (twice) at the Air Raid, and Allen, Texas, who beat them on a 20-yard touchdown pass as time expired. They won the OBU 7-on-7 tournament and have defeated Greenbrier, Conway, Warren, CAC, and Heritage Hall out of Oklahoma City.

4. Central Arkansas Christian
  • Probably the biggest pleasant surprise as they went 10-1 and won the Auburn Passing tournament. They continued to impress at the Shootout with victories over Bryant, Nashville, and twice over Watson Chapel. Their only losses were a last minute 2-point loss to Allen, a 1-point loss to Fayetteville, and an elimination loss to Lake Hamilton.

5. Rogers Heritage
  • A new offensive coordinator does not seem like it will slow down the War Eagles passing game. Their well-designed offense behind their sophomore QB Josh Qualls was a tough out at the Shootout. They defeated Russellville, Belton, TX, and Bryant, while their losses were to Pulaski Academy, Lake Hamilton, and Fayetteville.

6. Bryant
  • Although they were a bit of a disappointment at the Shootout, much of that could be attributed to the injury to playmaker Dillon Winfrey, their go to receiver and starting cornerback. Without him they struggled to find a rhythm on offense. However, Bryant is the only team to take down Pulaski Academy this summer as they scored on almost every possession in 6 games at the Summer Showdown.

7. Greenbrier
  • Greenbrier has taken down some good teams this year as they defeated Lake Hamilton at the Air Raid, and beat El Dorado and Bryant and demolished Conway, 53-28, at the Shootout. Their losses have come at the hands of Pulaski Academy, Lake Hamilton, Fayetteville, Belton, TX, and Heritage Hall (OK City).

8. El Dorado
  • We predict El Dorado will be much better at the Southwest Elite 7-on-7 at Shiloh in July. Their young quarterback and receivers never quite hit their stride at their Shootout, but their defense was able to make up with their closing speed on balls put up in the air. They were as impressive as any defense we've seen this summer.

9. Warren
  • The youth of this team has to have Coach Hembree excited about the next three years. Wide receiver Jalen Cobb is a great target to build an offense around, and they will likely improve exponentially each time they play.

10. Conway
  • There are too many playmakers for this team not to be dangerous. They had some disappointing losses at the Shootout, but Coach Ashcraft and staff will fix the problems and they will not be easy to beat by mid July.
There you have our rankings.  Let us know what you think.

NOTE:  One team intentionally left off is Springdale Har-Ber.  However, we are unsure of any 7-on-7 competitions that they have competed in this summer. There is no doubt they belong here, but we're not sure where they fit in, They will make their first mark at the Southwest Elite on July 8-9. We're sure they will be one of the top 5 teams in that 24 team field, but that is pure speculation on our part.

7-on-7 Offense, 5 Wide - 3 Verticals

One of the most important things receivers learn from 7-on-7 is how they have to run routes based on a defense. Many kids will learn their routes, but are ineffective in games because they do simply that – run the route. Quarterbacks have to learn that difference as well and must know how receivers are going to attack a coverage.  He may also have to get them in the right place on their alignment if they are wrong as he is the coach on the field.  Here is an example:

This is a five-receiver set in which we are running 3 verticals against a cover 2. The read will be for one of the inside receivers on the strong side. The weak #2 receiver is running a flag to pull the weak-side safety. The #3 receiver has to get inside the strong-side safety, then get vertical so he doesn’t get to the other safety and has to get over the dropping linebacker. The strong #2 receiver has to get deep and stay outside the safety, but cannot get too far outside to draw the flat corner deep. The other key is for these receivers not to get caught up with any linebackers that can knock them off of their route. Good route running will give the quarterback an easy read of the strong safety and an easy completion down the field.

Here is the same play against a cover 3. Everyone has the same assigned route, but our #3 and #2 receivers on the strong side have to run their route a little differently. First, they will both may have a defender lined up on them that they will have to maneuver against. For instance, #2 needs to know that in cover 3, that SS will have flats, so he will need to get inside of him but then will need to get vertical keeping two things in mind: first, stay away from the free safety and second, get far enough inside the cornerback who is playing the deep outside third. The #3 receiver must get off of the linebacker and go hard in front of the free safety. Again, as long as the receivers are not held up by the underneath coverage and they run good routes, this is an easy completion for the quarterback.

Another note about the difference in these two plays against cover 2 and cover 3 is alignment.  If the receivers notice the coverage before the play, then they should adjust accordingly.  In cover 2, the #2 and #3 receivers should widen to give them more room and better angles with the strong-side safety.  The key for #2 is not to get too wide or stay too wide and draw the coverage of the flat corner.  In cover 3, both receivers should align closer to the middle of the field.  This allows them to split the safety sooner, giving the quarterback an quicker and easier read.  The difficulty for the #3 is getting through any traffic from the linebackers.

These are easy reads for the quarterback as long as all receivers do their job.  For instance, the #1 strong receiver can't loaf, or his CB will get on the back of the #2 receiver (in either coverage).  Same can be said about the weak #2 receiver.  If he doesn't pull that weak safety over in cover 2, then the weak safety can make a play on the #3.  If the weak #1 aligns too far inside versus cover 3, then it shortens the distance the CB is to the middle of the field, possibly allowing him to be a factor in the play as he reads the quarterback.  Last note for the quarterback is to trust your receivers to beat linebackers.  If he is waiting to see if they will beat the dropping linebackers, then he is waiting too long.  He has to know that a dropping linebacker cannot keep up with a receiver that is running full speed.  He also cannot leave that pass short as that would allow that LB to come into play.

2011 AAA Dead Period -- Misunderstanding of Southern 7-on-7 Football

Well, we have reached the Arkansas Activities Association Dead Period for 2011.  Of course, that doesn't mean that the AAA has suspended its activities.  They will be hosting All-Star games while the teams are on "vacation."  So much for a needed rest for the coaches in the state.  In any case, we didn't want to abruptly go away for 2 weeks. We found a couple of articles from Michigan that claim that Armageddon is coming there because 7-on-7 football is becoming popular in that state.

Links

The writers of these articles don't understand 7-on-7 in the South in general and Arkansas in particular. The worry is that we will have AAU style football with agents, shady characters, and all the rest once these events get out of control. However, in Arkansas, the high school teams field 7-on-7 squads, and in general, coaches run the 7-on-7 events in the state.  We haven't seen AAU style teams being assembled simply because the coaches in the state are using these events to improve their team for the next season. In addition, the coaches running the events could simply refuse entry to their events for "all-star" teams.

It seems to us that the problem with the 7-on-7 described in the northern/mid-west states is that the high school coaches are giving the opening to the shady characters.  Let us know if you think that this issue is being overblown in Michigan.  Also, do you see this as a problem in Arkansas?

Shootout of the South Final Results

Pulaski Academy became the first repeat champion of the Shootout of the South as they defeated Allen (TX) in the finals for the second straight year. Both teams’ offenses were flawless in the first half as they each scored on all four possessions, but Pulaski Academy held a 30-28 lead as they had two successful two-point tries. The Bruins would hold the Eagles to one touchdown in the second half, but scored three of their own to win, 49-35.

All four semifinalists were undefeated at 8-0 before facing off in the Baptist Health Championship Bracket. Lake Hamilton had an 11-point halftime lead, 25-14, before Allen came back to win, 35-33 to advance to the finals. In the other battle of unbeatens, Fayetteville stopped Pulaski Academy on their first possession, but was unable to score themselves before the Bruins rolled to a 25-0 halftime lead en route to a 38-20 victory.

Pulaski Academy’s Fredi Knighten was the Top Gun Award winner, given to the tournament’s best quarterback while teammate Aum’Arie Wallace won Best Defensive Player Award for the second straight year. Allen’s Courtland Tolbert was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Receiver.

In the Chenal Heights Nursing and Rehab consolation bracket, Heritage Hall (Oklahoma City) defeated Greenbrier, 32-14 in the finals. Afton (OK) defeated Hilldale (OK), 39-6, to claim the SportStop consolation bracket title.

2011 Schedule for the Shootout of the South

We know that many of you out there are looking for a schedule for the 2011 Shootout of the South that begins Friday, June 17.  Here is a link to the 2011 pool play schedule (games begin at 11:00 am). For many of these events, you can look at a single pool and say "Man, that pool is brutal."  The depth of the 2011 Shootout will cause you to say that about every single pool.  Here are the pools for this year's Shootout (our predicted pool play winner is bold):

  • Pool A
    • BELTON (TX)
    • ROGERS HERITAGE
    • MAGNOLIA
    • PULASKI ACADEMY
    • PRATTVILLE CHRISTIAN (AL)
    • RUSSELLVILLE
  • Pool B
    • ALLEN (TX)
    • BRYANT
    • CENTRAL ARKANSAS CHRISTIAN
    • HILLDALE (OK)
    • NASHVILLE
    • WATSON CHAPEL
  • Pool C
    • AFTON (OK)
    • CONWAY
    • HERITAGE HALL (OK)
    • LAKE HAMILTON
    • PARKVIEW
    • WARREN
  • Pool D
    • DUMAS
    • EL DORADO
    • FAYETTEVILLE
    • GREENBRIER
    • LAKESIDE
    • STIGLER (OK)
The unique nature of the guaranteed two game format tournament that begins Saturday is that excelling in pool play doesn't grant automatic entry into the championship bracket.  The teams play "Sectionals" to determine their placement into the 3 single elimination tournaments that crown winners.  Here is the link to the 2011 Tournament Bracket (starts on page 2).  I will warn you that probably have to print it out and run a mock bracket to understand what is happening in the sectionals.

We are looking for a fantastic event and the winner will definitely EARN that qualification for the 7-on-7 National Championship on July 21-23 in Hoover, Alabama. We hope to see you at Mighty Blue Bird this weekend.

Top 7-on-7 Teams Invade Bluebird Complex

7th Annual Shootout of the South Begins Friday in West Little Rock

The Shootout of the South 7-on-7 Football Tournament has become one of the more prestigious tournaments in the region. This year’s tournament attracts top 7-on-7 teams in Arkansas as well as teams from Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama.

Each of the twenty-four teams will compete in five pool play games on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. at the Mighty Bluebird Complex at 6800 Pinnacle Valley Road in Little Rock. The last pool play games will begin at 5:25 p.m. Pool play results will seed Saturday’s tournament, which is a guaranteed-two game format, beginning at 10 a.m. The finals for the championship and consolation brackets will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament champion will qualify for the 7-on-7 National Championship on July 21-23 in Hoover, Alabama.

Seven teams will travel across state lines to compete highlighted by Allen High School and Belton High School in Texas, and Heritage Hall from Oklahoma City. Allen won the tournament in 2006 and finished runner-up in 2007, 2008, and 2010. Belton won the Belton 7-on-7 Texas State Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, and Heritage Hall, the 2007 Shootout Champions, won the Kansas State 7-on-7 last week, a tournament that featured over 30 teams. Other out of state teams includes Prattville Christian Academy out of Prattville, Alabama and three other Oklahoma schools – Afton, Hilldale, and Stigler.

The Arkansas teams participating will be 7A schools Bryant, Conway, Fayetteville, and Rogers Heritage; 6A State Champion, El Dorado, along with other 6A members Lake Hamilton, Parkview, and Russellville; 5A teams Central Arkansas Christian, Hot Springs Lakeside, Magnolia, and Watson Chapel; and 4A Dumas, Nashville, Pulaski Academy, and Warren. Three of those teams are former Shootout winners – Lake Hamilton (2008), Fayetteville (2009), and Pulaski Academy (2010). Pulaski Academy won the Sonic Air Raid in Searcy on June 4 and the ASPC 7-on-7 Summer Showdown on June 9, Lake Hamilton won the Ouachita Baptist 7-on-7 Tournament on June 9, and Central Arkansas Christian won the Auburn Passing Camp Tournament last week.

Although this year’s tournament isn’t laced with as many BCS quarterback commitments as 2010, there are several who can wing it in their own right. Allen senior Alec Morris has offers from Wake Forest and North Texas. Three of the top senior quarterbacks in Arkansas this year will be on display in Neal Burcham of Greenbrier, Fredi Knighten of Pulaski Academy, and Levi Runyan of Lake Hamilton. Two interesting juniors to watch will be Austin Allen of Fayetteville and Lucas Reed of El Dorado. Allen is filling the shoes of brother Brandon, who signed with the University of Arkansas, and Reed is stepping into the starting role that was occupied by his brother, Taylor, who inked with the University of Memphis. Another junior, Bryant’s Hayden Lessenberry, should soon be on the radar of college coaches. He may remind some Arkansans of former Razorback and Russellville Cyclone, Landon Leach, as Lessenberry was the starting catcher for Bryant’s state championship team. Rogers Heritage sophomore Josh Qualls will look to make a splash out of the gate as he is projected as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2014 class.

No bigger name, and likely no bigger recruit, will be at the Shootout than Heritage Hall’s running back, Barry Sanders, Jr. Sanders has at least 14 BCS offers, including Arkansas, Alabama, Auburn, Notre Dame, and Florida State. Other running backs to watch for are Russellville’s Kendall Bond, Conway’s Cordarius Irby, Fayetteville’s Brice Gahagans, and Watson Chapel’s Marquis Handley.

Heritage Hall boasts another player with NFL bloodlines in wide receiver, Sterling Shepard, son of the late Derrick Shepard, who played five seasons as a receiver for the Dallas Cowboys. Shepard is committed to Oklahoma. Highlighting this year’s receiving class in Arkansas is Warren’s Jalen Cobb, who has committed to play for the Hogs. The most electric player at the tournament may be Bryant’s Dillon Winfrey, who will play both receiver and cornerback. Winfrey ran a 4.33 40-yard dash at Arkansas State’s camp and is starting to receive some attention from colleges. Other receivers to keep an eye on will be Afton’s Sam Shepard, Lakeside’s Ajalen Holley, Nashville’s Tasean Green, Conway’s Brandon Cox and Corven Alexander, El Dorado’s Wendell Thompson, Lake Hamilton’s Dre Bennett, Magnolia’s James Gaines, Allen’s Andrew Rodriguez and Oliver Pierce, and Pulaski Academy juniors LJ Wallace and Hunter Henry. Henry is projected as a tight end at the next level, and has offers from Arkansas, Arkansas State, Auburn, and Ole Miss.

Watson Chapel’s Cedric Burnett and Allen’s L.B. Bates lead the list of top defensive backs for this year’s tournament. Pulaski Academy will make it difficult for quarterbacks to go deep with Jeremy Brady and Aum’Arie Wallace roaming at the two safety spots. Bryant’s Caleb Thomas, along with Winfrey, Belton’s Tramaine Rose, El Dorado’s Quincy Hardwell, Dumas’ Trey Winchester, Fayetteville’s Brooks Ellis, Lake Hamilton’s Dante Ransom, and Afton’s Dusty Henry all look to impress in the secondary this weekend. Henry had 10 interceptions in 11 games in 2010, 6 of those were brought back for touchdowns.

Although linebackers don’t get to show their strengths in 7-on-7, they can still show off their skills in their pass defense. Allen’s Thaddeus LaGrone, who committed to Baylor last week, will likely be the top linebacker in attendance. Other linebackers to watch will be a pair from Lakeside, Houston Hunter and Harlen Jones, Warren’s Austin Thompson, Tyler Lindsey from Lake Hamilton, and Pulaski Academy sophomore Tyler Colquitt.

Mighty Bluebird Complex is off Highway 10 West on Pinnacle Valley Road. Admission to the tournament is $5 per car each day. Concessions will be available.

The tournament is sponsored by Baptist Health Orthopedic Center, Chenal Heights Nursing and Rehab, SportStop, Latitude Solutions, The Val Hansen Real Estate Team, Moggle Inc., Hatcher Insurance Agency, Nike, Gatorade, and Roller Chenal Funeral Home.

2011 ASPC Summer Showdown Results

Pulaski Academy won their second 7-on-7 tournament of the summer...by about 2/10 of a second! The Bruins went ahead of Bryant in the finals on a two-point conversion, 37-36 with less than 2 minutes left to play. On their 3rd down play from about the 30-yard line with about 20 seconds remaining, Bryant completed a touchdown pass and began celebrating their apparent tournament win, but the official had ruled that the 4-second timer had buzzed, nullifying the Hornet touchdown, giving the Bruins the tournament championship.

Those two teams had hooked up earlier in the day in pool play, a game in which Bryant won, 42-29. That last non-scoring drive by Bryant was the only possession that the Hornets did not score against Pulaski Academy (11 touchdowns in 12 possessions).

The most pleasant surprise of the day was likely the play of the Fordyce Redbugs. Coach David Little and the Redbugs finished, 3-1-1, tying Maumelle in pool play then defeating Robinson, Mena, and Maumelle before falling to Pulaski Academy in the tournament semifinals. Fordyce will be a very tough matchup for 3A teams this fall.

The 2011 Arkansas Sports Performance Center 7-on-7 Summer Showdown will be held Thursday at Robinson High School in Little Rock.  Last year's event was cut short after pool play due to a late afternoon thunderstorm.  Bryant and Pulaski Academy were named co-champions after they both went 4-0 in pool play.  Both of those teams are back this year and will waste no time matching up as they will play each other in the 2:00 game.

Pool Play will begin at 1:30 and will end at approximately 5:30.  All teams will be seeded in a 10-team single elimination tournament that begins at 5:40.  The finals will be at 7:50.
