20 Teams Ready for 7-on-7 Shootout

(LITTLE ROCK, AR) –Twenty high school football teams invade the Mighty Bluebird Complex on Friday for the 9th Annual Shootout of the South 7-on-7 Tournament presented by Baptist Health Orthopedic Center.

Highlighting this year’s field are three-time defending champion, Pulaski Academy, along with former champions Allen, Texas (2006), Heritage Hall (2007), Lake Hamilton (2008), and Fayetteville (2009).

Newcomers to this year’s tournament are Cashion (OK), Clarendon, Clinton, Jacksonville, Little Rock Christian, and Malvern.

Other teams include Afton (OK), Greenbrier, Mayflower, Stigler (OK), Watson Chapel (Pine Bluff), Central (Little Rock), Harrison, Lakeside (Hot Springs), and Russellville.

Pulaski Academy, Fayetteville, and Russellville have attended the tournament every year since it began in 2005 as the Bruin 7-on-7 Tournament.

The marquee quarterbacks going into the weekend will be Lakeside’s Garrett Carson and Allen’s Kyler Murray, who has six BCS offers that include Arkansas, Ohio State, and Texas A&M.

Players to keep an eye on at receiver are Jalen Curtis of Russellville, Jordan Dennis and Blake Power of Fayetteville, Jacksonville duo Robert Harris and Kajon Daniels, and Clarendon’s Richard Knox.  Fayetteville’s C.J. O’Grady will work at tight end.

Catching the ball out of the backfield will be highlighted by running backs Logan Moragne and Deandre Brown of Little Rock Central, Lamont Gause of Jacksonville, and Terrell Tyson of Fayetteville.

Defensively, Pulaski Academy’s Tyler Colquitt and Allen’s Christian Sam, who has 16 BCS level offers, will be anchors at linebacker.  Central’s Hayden Mills, Baylor commit Chad Adams and Mayomi Olootu of Allen, and Fayetteville’s Dre Greenlaw alongside two-way players Dennis and Tyson will be the best bets to shut down the offenses from their secondary spots.

The top four teams will qualify for the 7on7U National Championship (www.7on7.com) being held July 19-21 in Washington, D.C.  Pulaski Academy, won the inaugural event in 2011.

Mighty Bluebird Complex is off Highway 10 West on Pinnacle Valley Road.  Admission to the tournament is $3 per person each day.  Age 5 and under is free.  Concessions will be available.

Twitter (@Shootout7on7) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/ShootoutOfTheSouth) will be updated throughout the tournament.

The tournament is sponsored by Baptist Health Orthopedic Center, Landers Chevrolet, Virtual Piggy, Adidas, The Hatcher Agency, Landers Toyota, and Midwest Sports.
